Grimy Bathtub? An Easy Guide To Leave It Fully Clean!

There’s nothing greater than a good tub session to wash away the day’s worries. However, if you happen to meet gross buildup and stubborn stains, it will quickly turn your relaxing time into a not-so-chill experience.

Don’t let grime, hard-water gunk, soap residue, mold, or mildew in your tub ruin your day! Let us help you with the following straight-to-the-point guide to leave yours spotless so you can enjoy a nice bath!

Step #1. Get the tub ready

To give your tub a proper makeover, make sure it’s completely empty. Soap bars, shampoos, and all your bath products go outside. Also, set aside curtains or tub mats if you have them—they’re just obstacles in the cleaning process.

Once the tub is clear, dampen the surface with warm water to get the grime loosening up. If the outer surface is also looking a bit grimy, grab a damp microfiber cloth to moisten it too.

Pro-tip: Save your knees with a mat or some knee pads—kneeling throughout the process can get painful!

Step #2. Make a DIY cleaner

The cleaner you’ll need to use will mostly depend on what your tub can withstand. But no need to spend big bucks on fancy store-bought stuff; your cleaning arsenal is probably right there at home.

  • Ceramic, porcelain, acrylic. No need for heavy-duty cleaners. Mix a squirt of mild detergent with warm water for a bubbly mix.
  • Fiberglass. Kick dirt and stains to the curb with a blend of ¼ cup vinegar and a cup of water. Pour it into a spray bottle for a more efficient application.
  • Stone resin. These kinds of tubs have a particular shine that not all cleaners achieve. Whip up your own cleaner by combining baking soda, vegetable oil-based soap, water, and vinegar.

Step #3. Swipe away the mess

Carrying out the right method to wipe the grime off of your tub will get you better results—plus, no damage!

  • Ceramic, porcelain, acrylic. Wipe it down with your DIY cleaner and a clean kitchen sponge. For those stubborn stains, give them a run for their money with the rough side of your sponge.
  • Fiberglass. Spritz your vinegar concoction across the surface, let it chill for ten minutes, then wipe with a clean microfiber cloth. Stubborn spots? Roll up those sleeves and put in some elbow grease.
  • Stone resin. Apply your homemade solution with a clean cloth, making circular motions—it spreads more evenly, giving a polished look. Rinse and repeat.

Step #4. Don’t skip the drain

It may not seem that important, but a dirty drain can foster mold and cause some awful odors. Pour hot water down first, but do it carefully and slowly. Otherwise, you might get burned or damage the tub.

After the hot water, sprinkle a cup of baking soda down there and wait 20 minutes. Then, carefully pour hot vinegar to dissolve any gunk. At the end, pour more hot water for a squeaky-clean drain.

Pro-tip: Use a funnel to pour the hot liquids down the drain.

Step #5. Rinse and dry

Give your tub a final rinse with warm water to wash away any lingering grime. Most importantly, make sure to dry it thoroughly with a clean microfiber cloth—excess moisture could lead to mold over time.
